Collaboration, collaboration, collaboration. There is nothing else in the world of museum work.

My boss, Dylan, approaced me in the middle of 2025 with a proposal to add a new exhibit to our tiny museum. He said he and I would be fabricating the entire thing and would need to interpret the material for our audiences. What was it for? Geothermal energy sites, specifically a new company called Fervo Energy which was moving into Milford, Utah. I had no idea what the meant nor how to create such an exhibit.

While Dylan took most of this load upon himself (me being both part-time and in my masters program), we worked together on fabrication plans, signage design, information interpretation, and hosting an opening.

It soon became clear that this wasn’t some wild hair to create an exhibit on somewhat current events, but a partnership running deeper than just the Frehner Museum but with Southern Utah University. The building of Cape Station in Milford offered an opportunity for the University to create a “launchpad” partnership with Fervo Energy for student internship and career placement. Our part in all of this was almost a physical location to inform students of the chance to work with a young and growing company. With multiple (and might I add successful) stations already online in Texas, there is a lot of promise for aspiring geology students in such a field just an hour north of SUU.

With the build done and installed, I worked extensively on signage design and layout while Dylan smoothed out information with some professors on campus. Our deadline approached quickly as we added in a student-led exhibit on volcanology to the left of the Fervo exhibit. We were down to the wire, literally doing finishing touches an hour before our grand opening which brought in representatives from Fervo Energy, the dean of the college, individuals from campus workforce services, faculty from the geosciences department, and the university president.

The new exhibit, Energy Beneath Our Feet, is the Frehner Museum’s newest permanent display. We hope Dylan’s build will last for a very long time.
